Fontain, a British man who used to be a Jazz singer and a successful Diamond trader until he accepted Islam and dedicated his life to Da’wah:
John Fontain was born in Manchester, UK to a working class Christian family. As a young boy, he would always make an intention in Church that he was praying to God alone. At seven, he was sure that there was something wrong with Christianity when the priest changed the chorus lyrics he had written from ‘Jesus and God’ to ‘Jesus is God’.
At the age of fourteen, with a growing passion for music, he became a professional jazz singer, travelling to places and performing in sports stadiums, hotels etc. With a good income and the drive to become the most famous jazz singer in the country, he naturally did not feel the need to attend university!
When he was eighteen, he struck ‘diamond’ deals with some of the West African immigrants who had come to England, and thus, went to visit Sierra Leone in West Africa. On his way, he was stuck in Senegal, penniless. Seeing his plight, a Muslim hotel manager offered him shelter in his own home. During his stay, he marveled at the courteous mannerisms of his host, and recalls that when he first heard the Azan, it was as if ‘his heart was ripped out of his chest’. He would watch his Muslim hosts offer their prayers; this brief period in Senegal was his first positive impression about Islam.
Back in London, he enrolled in a highly selective and competitive course related to the diamond industry. He then travelled to Sierra Leone multiple times, but even during times of bright business prospects, he felt something was missing. At this stage, he came across a ‘Muslim’ village in South Africa, which was notorious for witchcraft and communication with jinn. There, he actually saw women tying knots on strings in order to bring a person under the influence of jinn!
Fortunately, one of his friends from Syria informed him that witchcraft actually went against Islamic injunctions and he handed him a copy of ‘Fortress of a Muslim’ (An authentic collection of Duas). When he started reading this book, he came across Surah al-Falaq:
Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
From the evil of that which He created
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
And from the evil of the blowers in knots
And from the evil of an envier when he envies.
Here was a verse mentioning the very same practices that he had seen with his own eyes! Finding some reality in the Quran, he started to take Islam more seriously and started to learn about it. Though not yet having converted, he would pray in his own way and he even fasted during Ramadan!
One day in 2008, while in Egypt, he went to a Mosque in Cairo to pray. When he was about to do so, his friend told him he could not pray until he had taken the Shahadah (Muslim declaration of faith). John was stunned at this point because, all this time, even having hung around with Muslim friends in England, no one had ever told him about the Shahadah, the actual entry into Islam, the passage of safety in the Hereafter!
until that time in Cairo, he had not actually wanted to leave his old life, but when he himself took the initiative to whole heartedly accept the Muslim way of life, it was then that Allah introduced the Shahadah to him!
He finally took his Shahadah in a Hardees branch in Cairo!
In 2011 he found out he had a brain tumor (of which he is now recovered). It was a blessing in disguise that gave him the time and opportunity to call people to Islam full time.
In 2012 he went back to Sierra Leone and started to look for opportunities where he could help. Today he is working through an organization called ‘Volunteer Sierra Leone’ with over 65 Muslim schools to provide better education to over 14,000 students throughout Sierra Leone.
He also writes Da’wah literature and have produced four Da’wah booklets: ‘Jesus and the Injeel’ which is a Da’wah booklet outlining the correct understanding of Jesus and his message calling the Christians to Islam. ‘Quick Guide to Islam’ which covers a brief explanation of the basics of Islam, ‘Quick Guide to Salah’ which teaches new Muslims how to perform Salah, and ‘The Ninety Nine Names of Allah’ a translation of a lecture by Sheikh Uthaymeen which aims to teach Muslims the names of Allah.
He is also working on a series of ‘Welcome to… Tour Guides,’ which are a series of Da’wah booklets specific to each of the tourist hot spots throughout the Muslim world. This series will use the historical, cultural aspects of Islam to convey the message to the tourists in the Muslim world. This will also enable the local Muslims who cannot speak European languages to fulfill their obligation of conveying the message of Islam to the tourists by simply giving them a booklet.
Alhamdulillah 50,000 booklets have already been printed and distributed worldwide. All of these booklets are available for FREE and to order for distribution on www.JesusAndTheInjeel.com
He is currently in the process of writing 2 more extensive books ‘The God Solution’ an Islamic answer to Atheism and ‘Jesus and the Injeel the Untold Story’ a more extensive work of my research into Judaism and Christianity, both of which he is hoping to publish very soon insha’Allah.
Alhamdulilah over the past few years He has been given the opportunity to be able travel and teach Muslims how to give Da’wah and share some of my experiences. He has visited over 45 countries inlcuding Malaysia, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, Egypt, Bosnia, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Gambia, Senegal, Jerusalem, West Bank, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brazil, USA and much of Europe helping set up dawah activities and new Muslim support groups with da’wah teams accross the world. He is also working on a series of high quality Islamic history documentaries and educational videos.
